Prof. Wole Soyinka agrees with those who said the current Nigerian economy is dieing and needs urgent attentions.
It was reported that Soyinka made this suggestion when he paid a
courtesy call on the minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed
in Abuja on Thursday, February 18.
Professor Wole Soyinka has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to
convene an emergency economic conference to enable experts proffer
solutions to the economic crisis bedeviling the country
‘‘The economic condition of a nation...
does not deteriorate over night,
something came before that deterioration. A certain prolonged process of
attrition that happened in the past is now knocking on the door. The
consequences of the past mis-governance is what we are undergoing right
now.’’
Apparently worried by the continuous decline in the nation’s economy,
the Nobel Laureate said: ‘‘I agree with those who say the economy is
bad. It is obvious and it is so bad. We really need an emergency
economic conference, bringing experts together to match the nation
forward. I think the economy is not encouraging. Quite frankly, I think
most economists will agree with this.
Dogara, who played host to unemployed aeronautic engineers and pilots
from his native Bauchi state, on February 16, exempted the All
Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government from being held
responsible for the current economic challenges facing Nigeria.
Meanwhile, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu
Dogara, has reportedly defended his party over the dwindling economy of
the country, Leadership reports.
